The Discovery Space Planetarium is the only state school owned planetarium in the UK, now open to the public. With regular shows for all the family, experience an immersive 360ᵒ look at the cosmos, and much more besides! Our shows are different every month to reflect the ever-changing sky, and can be tailored to your specific interests in the case of external hire. Travel beyond our solar system and discover a world of shining brilliance, as our October show guides you through the life cycle of stars. From the birth of a star in a stellar nursery to its journey towards a black hole or supernova, Astralis explains these phenomena in an easy narrative.

With eye-catching visuals and atmospheric music, this show is perfect for all the family. Enhanced by a live presentation, this is the perfect introduction to stellar science.

Get a monthly update on the night sky and more, as you learn how to start star-gazing for yourself. With high quality graphics and a knowledgeable presenter, come along to have all your astronomical questions answered!

Travel back in time to the era of the dinosaurs in this fast-paced learning adventure! Join our intrepid father-daughter duo as they scour the alien landscape of the distant past in search of the origins of flight.

This atmospheric full dome experience allows you to soar above the clouds and see long-dead creatures up close. Learn about continental drift, asteroids and much more as you follow the story of the dinosaurs through history.

Dinosaurs at Dusk is a stunningly beautiful depiction of our planet in years gone by, and is sure to astound you with the giants that once walked the Earth in an awe-inspiring 360° cinema.

Travel back to the beginning of time and experience the birth of the Sun. Discover how it came to support life, how it threatens life as we know it, and how its energy will one day fade away. Join us for a cinema experience like no other, complete with a live presentation.

Our presenter will guide you through the wonders of the night sky, before Sunstruck amazes you with surround sound and stunning graphics. Perfect for the new astronomer and seasoned stargazer alike, Sunstruck will leave you in awe of the powerful star right on our doorstep.

Starlight Odyssey

A series of fascinating lectures on astronomy and space exploration with our very own Laurence Anslow, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Join us once a month for an in-depth look into astronomy and space exploration, covering everything from the latest astronomical news to reviews of recent books and observing equipment. This entirely presenter-led show will tell you everything you need to know for the month ahead, and allow you to comprehensively prepare for your own observations.

Each 2-hour presentation will include use of the planetarium and there will also be a short break for informal discussions. A hot drink and biscuits are included in your ticket. With something for the novice and experienced stargazer alike, Starlight Odyssey is not to be missed!

Presented by Laurence Anslow, a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and Chloe Elliott, a former Winston Astronomy student and Astrophysics graduate of the University of Exeter.

Half Term Astronomy Course

Book your place now for our half term course, available to students in Years 7 and 8. With hands-on activities, full dome films and demonstrations in the planetarium, this course is a perfect introduction to the field of astronomy. Having had glowing feedback from our summer holiday course, we are very pleased to be able to offer this kind of learning experience once more. To book a place, please email Payment of £90 total will be required upfront through ScoPay, in order to confirm your place.

Astronomy Club

We run a weekly Astronomy club for Year 7 students, that takes place on Tuesdays at 3-4pm. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about space and pursue their particular interests in a fun and relaxed environment. Completely free of cost, the Astronomy club allows students to experience the universe with the aid of the only state-school owned planetarium in the UK.

What can you expect?

With the use of Digitarium technology, our planetarium can show you the night sky anywhere from the Australian outback to your own back garden, as well as fly to any object in our solar system and even beyond the galaxy. Our presenter is in full control, using images and data from real scientific research, brought to you in a live presentation that changes every month. We run regular shows every month, roughly 45 minutes in length, with both a live demonstration and a fulldome film. You'll get a monthly update on the night sky, a feature on a object or topic of interest and a showing of the selected film. Suitable for ages 4+, our shows are fun for all the family.

The planetarium is NOT suitable for those with sensitivity to flashing lights or dizzying motion. Please let us know in advance if you have any accessibility needs.

Private Hire

In addition to our public shows, the planetarium is available for hire to groups and businesses. Our spacious Discovery Space library and activity area is a perfect venue for your next meeting, social or conference, enhanced with a presentation inside the dome. We also cater for children's groups and school visits. With your input, we will tailor the whole experience to your needs and interests, so don't be afraid to get in touch!


The planetarium is situated within the Discovery Space. To find it, use the Sports Centre gate and follow the drive down to the end. The Discovery Space will be to the right of the car park.
