| An intrepid gang of Year 7s, 8s and 9s braved the volcano to visit Iceland over the half term. We set off nice and early on Tuesday and returned very tired but inspired late on Friday evening!
The first evening was spent walking to the Perlan, a café atop three water towers that has views over Reykjavik bay. Students got their first taste of Icelandic weather – a few rain drops, windy and cold! But all enjoyed the view and the food!
The next day we went on the Golden Circle tour. This included crossing the plate tectonic boundary in Thingvellir National Park, visiting a geothermal powerplant and shopping in the Kringlan Mall. For most students though the highlights were the magnificent double waterfall at Gullfoss and the amazing Strokkur geyser, which had us waiting in anticipation for the next 30m high spout! Later on that evening we went swimming at the local geothermally heated pool, which had flumes as well as a very welcoming hot tub area!
On Thursday it was a long drive down to the south of the island – well, we couldn’t ignore the volcano, could we? Having driven through the ash cloud and out the other side, we stopped for lunch at Vik and then visited Reynisfjara black lava sand beach. We continued on to the stunningly beautiful Skogarfoss Waterfall, with ash surrounding us on the floor, and Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, which we were able to walk behind.
That night we held Iceland’s Got Talent, which of course had many applicants. Highlights included a group performing Beyonce’s Single Lady and Puffin G’s rap (Mr. Gunnoo, don’t give up your day job!). Much fun was had by all – well done those that joined in.
Finally on the last day we headed to the eggiest of all places, the sulphur pits at Seltún, where students got a chance to clear their airways in the surroundings where astronauts practised walking before heading to the moon in the 60s and 70s. Then it was time to relax in the Blue Lagoon before heading off to the airport and home.
Big thanks go to all the staff and students that came; it was a most awe-inspiring trip and this was in part due to the wonderful attitude of the students that went. We got many compliments about their behaviour from lots of different people.
There is a facebook group that students can join to share their photos – see Mrs. Dudley for details.
