Year 7 boys win U12 Woking District Cup

Our year 7 boys put on a polished display to lift the District Cup at the first time of asking.

They started at a high tempo with both wingers Jack Lessels and Philip Samuel taking their respective full back on and putting the Fullbrook defence on the back foot. They both showed good pace and close control when taking on and getting by their opponents.

With the mobility and movement of Andy Graves and debutant Tom Gibson up front our lads were causing Fullbrook all sorts of problems and only some last ditch tackling and some fine saves kept us at bay early on.

In the centre of midfield the Atkinson brothers Michael and Robert showed skill, tenacity and almost telepathic understanding. They broke the Fullbrook play up and got forward in support of the Andy Graves and Tom Gibson. Their passing and movement were of the highest quality and a treat for all to see.

The defence was particularly solid with Jack Gunner-Hooper the rock on which it is built organising and passing balls intelligenty into midfield. Davey Parmenter showed the progress he has made this year with his reading of the game and covering across behind Bobby Goodchild at right back who also showed today how much he has improved this season with his excellent tackling and his often thoughtful distribution. Harry Chew at left back was strong and resolute in his defending and supported Jack Lessels effectively.

George Jones although he spent most of the game as a spectator, showed very good powers of concentration when reacting to a through ball came off his line quickly to close down the angles and making the forward shoot wide.
By half time we were 4-0 up and Andy Graves had shown what a predator he is in front of goal getting all four!

At half time Mr Brown made wholesale changes with Danny Howes replacing Michael Atkinson, Bobby Goodchild giving way to team captain Bobby Edwardes, Harry Chew coming off with Jack Lessels moving to full back with Matt Burt taking up the position on the right wing. Ross Kirby replaced Philip Samuels and Tom Pagulatos came on for debutant Tom Gibson.

It was much of the same in the second half and with the fresh legs of Danny Howes, Ross Kirby and Matt Burt in midfield we dominated most of the second half. Ross was particularly dangerous on the right wing cutting inside to score the 5th goal. Unfortunately he had to come off injured, but normal service resumed with Tom Pagulatos moving to the right wing and Tom Gibson re-instated up front with Andy Graves. Matt Burt showed his pace and athleticism on the left wing causing the full back many problems. Danny Howes was becoming more influential and passing the ball with accuracy and vision.

Team captain Bobby Edwardes was his normal unflappable self at right back showing good timing in the tackle, excellent composure on the ball and what and excellent passer he is.

The only bad point was Jack Lessels who broke his toe and had to be taken to hospital, we all wish him a speedy recovery.

3rd round of County Cup

Winston Boys U12 v Combe U12

We started slowly and found it difficult to get our passing game going. Then early on we lost Jack Lessels to an ankle injury. Harry Chew came on to take his place at left back. We started to get into our stride and put together a few decent passing moves.

Following a Combe corner we went one down to a looping shot from the edge of the area which eluded George Jones in our goal. Typically the lads showed their character and within two minutes we were on level terms after some free flowing football got the ball into the feet of Andy Graves 12 yards out and Andy doesn’t miss from those positions.

The game was finely balance with Robert Atkinson producing a performance of determination in the middle of the park, battling away and linking up play with his good passing. We then lost Davey Parmenter with Bobby Goodchild taking over at left back and Harry Chew moving to the centre of defence with Jack Gunner-Hooper who was once again a rock at the back winning aerial challenges and tackling with his normal vigour and strength.

We then went behind again from another corner despite the efforts of Phillip Samuel on the far post. Ross Kirby was getting some success getting forward on the right wing and we continued to press forward. Their efforts paid off when once again Andy Graves found himself with some space in the box and fired in our equaliser. It stayed this way up to half time.

Mr Brown made changes at half time with Michael Atkinson replacing Danny Howes in the centre of midfield. Danny moved to the left wing replacing Matthew Burt. Tom Pagulatos came on for the hard working Christian Shannon to join Andy Graves up front. Jack Gunner-Hooper was carrying an injury but after some encouragement from his team mates decided to carry on.

In the second half the changes were working and we began to dominate the play with the Atkinson brothers bossing the midfield with their tough tackling and accurate passing. Once more Ross Kirby was raiding down the right wing and he cut inside and slammed a 25 yard shot beyond the Combe goalkeeper. We went close on a number of occasions and finally got our fourth when once again Andy Graves popped up to stick the ball away.

A wayward clearance allowed Combe to score their third. They then put us under some late pressure hitting the post from a deflection off Ross Kirby. Near the end George Jones made a fine save tipping the ball onto the bar. The final whistle went we had won 4-3 in a very close encounter.

U12 win again to progress to the 3rd round of the County Cup.

The boys got into their stride early passing and moving the ball fluently through midfield. Ethan Clayton and Andy Graves looked threatening in and around the The Priory’s penalty area.

Within 3 minutes a loose ball fell to Michael Atkinson who struck the ball cleanly for the first goal.

The Priory were giving us some problems with long balls over our defence but George Jones in our goal was alert to the danger and came off his line to clear .
Our pressure began to pay off and Andy Graves scored our second. Then Philip Samuel who minutes before had been switched to the right wing scored two goals in quick succession to put us up 4-0 the busy Ethan Clayton completed the scoring in the first half with our boys now totally bossing the game.

Mr Brown and Tom Davis made five changes at half time. With Harry Chew having his first taste in goal.

With the wind behind them in the second half Winston now dominated possession and territory. Davey Parmenter playing his first game settled in well.

We scored another eight goals in the second half with Andy Graves completing his hat-trick and Robert Atkinson netting twice. Jack Lessels promote from left back to left wing scored with a great run and shot. The priory then conceded and own goal before Christian Shannon slammed home from 15 yards and Ross Kirby scored the final goal from an acute angle.

The final score of 13-0 did not flatter our boys who put on a wonderful team performance.

U12 boys lose on penalties.

Our under 12 boys lost their second round National Cup match on penalties 4-2 at Coombe Boys School New Malden.

Without Andy Graves through illness and Matt Burt. Mr Brown changed the formation from 4-4-2 to 4-1-4-1 and it was not a success with our boys failing to make any real clear cut chances in the first half. Ethan Clayton playing up front on his own was too often isolated and marked out of the game. Coombe scored with a very lucky looping cross which evaded George Jones. Coombe were then further in the lead when a mix up in the defence allowed the Coombe striker to get one on one. Phillip Samuel and Robert Atkinson were having good games in midfield and Robert broke into the box and was fouled. We had a penalty! Unfortunately the reliable Jack Gunner-Hooper scuffed his shot and the goalkeeper saved easily. We went in at half time 2-0 down.

Mr Brown then finally changed the formation back to the familiar 4-4-2 and we dominated the second half.

Jack Gunner-Hooper scored from a direct free kick.

Danny Howes and later Hayden Sutton were causing major problems down the right wing ably supported by man of the match Ross Kirby, whose tackling and passing were of the top order.

The movement of Christian Shannon and Tom Pagulatos were causing all sorts of problems in the Coombe penalty area. Eventually Tom got onto the end of a lose ball and fired it into the net. 2-2.

We then went on to have 3 efforts cleared off the line Christian grazed the post with a fine shot and we had 8 corners to their none. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to get another goal and went out penalties.

Another wonderful performance which showed great heart, spirit and determination.

Stats:
Line up; George Jones, Ross Kirby, Bobby Edwardes, Jack Gunner-Hooper, Jack Lessels, Danny Howes, Phillip Samuel, Robert Atkinson, Michael Atkinson.

U12 Football

Our Unders 12’s played their first round County Cup match on the 6th October 2009 at home against Woolmer Hill School.

Our boys dominated this match with George Jones not required to make a meaningful save. Phillip Samuel and Robert Atkinson in the centre of midfield proved too strong and skilful for a very determined Woolmer Hill midfield. They won many of their tackles but the quality and quickness of their passing is what caused Woolmer Hill the most problems. With Michael Atkinson and Matt Burt raiding down the flanks the Woolmer Hill full backs were being given a torrid time.
All the lads in midfield were giving the ball to Andy Graves and Ethan Clayton who tormented Woolmer Hill in their penalty area.
With Jack Gunner-Hooper and Bobby Edwards commanding in the centre of our defence we were never under any real threat.
Both full backs Ross Kirby on the right and Jack Lessels on the left ably supported Matt and Michael going forward but also were very disciplined in their defensive duties.
We went in at half time 4-0 to the good.
Changes were made at half time with George Shannon replacing Ross at right back, Tom Pagulatos replacing Ethan up front and Danny Howes coming on the left wing for Matt.
The pattern did not change with Phillip and Robert controlling the play through the centre of midfield.
Tom looked a threat in the box and was linking up well with Andy.
George stuck to his task getting in some serious tackles and headed challenges.
Danny carried on where matt left off giving the Woolmer Hill full back a going over.
Later on Christian Shannon came on with Tom moving to the wide right and Michael taking a break. Also harry Chew replaced Jack Gunner-Hooper at left centre back showing what an important versatile player he is for our team.
We came out 8-0 winners.

Subs: D Howes, H Chew, C. Shannon, T Pagulatos, G Shannon

On Tuesday 29th September our lads played their first round National Cup against Littlehampton Community School.

After a difficult start when Littlehampton got through our defence, without George Jones in goal we might have been three down. The boys then began to play their football. Passing and moving the ball very well. Andy Graves’ movement off the ball and his vision when passing to the very mobile Ethan Clayton caused the Littlehampton defence many problems.

As in our game against Woking High Robert Atkinson was key in the midfield linking up play from defence to attack. George Shannon also showed what a good tackler he is by breaking up Littlehampton’s attacks.

On the right wing Phillip Samuel supported by Ross Kirby and on the left wing Danny Howes supported by Jack Lessels got behind the Littlehampton defence and caused them many problems.

Jack Gunner-Hooper and Bobby Edwards in the centre of defence communicated well and dealt with most of the problems the Littlehampton forwards posed. We went in at half time leading 4-2.

The lads then dominated the second half with their quality football and George Jones had very little to do in the second half. Phillip Samuel moved to right centre midfield at the start of the second half with Matt Burt going on to the right wing. The goals came at regular intervals. All the substitutes came on and Michael Atkinson did well on the left wing. The final score 9-2.
