Extended Schools

 [Login]  [Print version]

As a school, we are striving for full provision of Extended School Services for our students, their families and the wider community. It is our belief that participation in wider opportunities outside of the normal school hours gives students the opportunity to better themselves as young people and can help to bring better cohesion to the community.

Free Swimming for all Under 16s in Woking

MAKING A SPLASH ABOUT FREE SWIMMING

Local people who live in and around Woking Borough and are aged 60 and over and 16 and under will be able to swim for free at Woking’s Pool in the Park from 1 April 2009, thanks to a new initiative funded by Woking Borough Council, Woking Youth Council, Runnymede Borough Council and the Government.

Linked to the national Change4Life campaign, the free swimming initiative aims to get more people enjoying active, healthy lives. Swimming is recognised as one of the most popular ways for people in the country to keep fit and, as it’s low impact, it’s great for people who have problems with their joints or who find exercise difficult.

Woking Borough Council is one of just five Surrey boroughs that has decided to embrace this opportunity to encourage more people in to the pool, as part of its commitment to improving the health and well-being of the local population.

Cllr David Bittleston, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Health and Well-being, said: “I am absolutely delighted to be supporting the free swimming initiative. We are confident that free access to the pool during public swimming times will encourage people in these two age groups to enjoy swimming on a regular basis and adopt a year-round exercise routine.”

The free swimming initiative will begin on 1 April 2009 and will run until 31 March 2011. To benefit from the free access to the pools, people aged 60 and over and 16 and under need to apply for a Key Card at Woking Leisure Centre, Pool in the Park or the Civic Offices. An application form can be downloaded from the Council’s website www.woking.gov.uk but the completed form must be presented with proof of age at one of the Council venues listed. The Key Card will be issued free of charge and will give users an opportunity to take advantage of discounts and special offers at around 30 other leisure and well-being venues in the area.
